How to answer tell me about yourself

Tell me about yourself is undeniably the first ice breaker question between the interview and interviewee and therefore, it sets the entire tone of the interview.

The best part about this question is that’s it’s an open-ended question which means it gives you a blank canvas that you can fill exactly the way you want.

Hi guys, welcome back to shrofile, my name is Simran Keswani and today in this video, I will be talking about how to answer “tell me about yourself” but before I do that, please take a moment to subscribe to our channel and also press the bell icon so you can get latest updates from us every time we come online.

Now without further ado, lets get started.

Now before we move on to how to answer this question, let’s understand why do the interviewers even ask this question. Now the most prior reason for asking this question is to know whether your experience aligns with the job description. So, it’s important we keep our answers strictly to the point and professional.

Second reason of asking this question is to get a gist of you, now it’s very obvious that the employers get a whole bunch of resumes in a day and they don’t have the time to gauge through every CV, so this question saves them time and get a brief of you.

So now that we know why do the employers ask this question, let’s understand how to answer this question

Now the first tip is to – Keep it relevant

Always remember that the reason you got to be interviewed for this job role is because of your experience that aligns with the job description. So, instead of starting with your whole life story, keep it strictly professional and to the point. The employer isn’t interested to know whether your pet is a dog or a cat, keep it professional, to the point and relevant.

For example: If you are applying for a content writing role, you can start with greetings and follow it up by talking about your education and experience as a content writer.

Now, lets move on to the second point.

Second tip is to – Highlight your skills

Now the best part about this question is that it gives you an opportunity to sell yourself and impress the head-hunters as to why you make a perfect fit for this role.
So, make sure to Include 2-3 sentences about your skills and achievement that’s relevant with the job role.

For example, you can say that, being a content writer, I have previous experience in long formats as well as short formats writing and I also acquire the proper knowledge of SEO and SEM’s and hold a certified degree of Google for the same.

Or you can say, that I have written content pieces for various companies and they have become my repeated clients.

Now when you form your answers this way, it shows credibility and leaves an ever-lasting impression on the recruiter.

Now let’s move on to the third tip – Showcase your passion

So now that you are done telling the recruiter about your role and achievement, its now time to show the employer that how you stand out and what makes you better than your competitors. Always remember that the companies are not only looking for someone who has relevant job experience but also someone who makes their life easy and that someone can only be a person who is passionate and enthusiastic about the job role.

So, make sure to include whatever you know about the company and the role; well-done research showcases your dedication and enthusiasm towards that role.

For example, let’s say I am applying for a social media executive role and I have to show that I am passionate about that role so It goes like: I understand that you are looking for a social media expert who also has proper knowledge of running ads and I am really excited since what you are doing with your campaign is exactly in line with my skills and expertise.

For example, let’s say I am applying for a social media executive role and I have to show that I am passionate about that role so It goes like: I understand that you are looking for a social media expert who also has proper knowledge of running ads and I am really excited since what you are doing with your campaign is exactly in line with my expertise and my skills

So, see now that you frame you answer in such a way it showcases that you have actually done research about the company and their campaigns and it shows that you are not only interested in you know the salary or the position, they’re providing but you are actually interested in the functioning and the working of the company.

That was about the third point, now let’s move on to the fourth point

Now the fourth tip is: Practice but don’t recite

Research has shown that everything from your tone to your body language, creates an ever-lasting mental image and having said its very important to lay emphasis on not only we are going to include in our answer but also the way we present it.

So, by the time you would be sitting at the interview table it’s very obvious that the recruiters already have your resume so instead of merely reciting or mugging up the whole thing which you have in your resume its better to practice so you have a general idea of what you are going to talk about.

The best way to look natural is to do a practice session prior to our interview with a friend or maybe a family member, that can help you in giving clarity of thoughts and also eliminate the last-minute nervousness.

So, that was about the fourth point and now let’s move to the fifth point

Now the fifth and final point is to maintain optimism

Now whether its replying with joy and excitement or keeping the topics positive, whatever the case be make sure to avoid any dull moment in the conversation of your interview and keep the interview positive throughout. Even if there’s a question that makes you stumble a bit, make sure you don’t let the nervousness overshadow you.
